Lyrics Lounge: Session I

June 4, 2010

Yesterday was the first session of Lyrics Lounge Music Club (Season 1), a new arts initiative for students at Harlem Children’s Zone’s Employment and Technology Center, ETC. Our theme was “Do It Yourself: Highlighting Independent Artists Making Music and Pressing Boundaries“. Students and staff came  out and showed much love in support of the effort. As far as the happenings, esteemed recording artists Viva Mayday and Nyle came through to perform and speak with the youth about making it as independent artists in the changing music business. Viva Mayday opened the event with songs from their latest EP 100 Years. “Bay of Pigs” was a major hit with the kids (Gotta cop that single, folks). Nyle followed their smash performance with a screening of the video for his critically acclaimed rendition of Lil Wayne’s “Let the Beat Build“. Directly after, students had an opportunity to sit down with both artists for a Q&A. Much knowledge was transferred, and our youth were profoundly inspired. After a much needed pizza break, the open mic commenced. Students, staff, and guests hit the stage to jam with Nyle and Viva Mayday. Rockin’! Who could have asked for a better end to a long week?! Next week…We’re gonna do it again. There are 4 more sessions of Lyrics Lounge left for this first season. Be a part of the movement.

Flashing Lights: Event Pics

One of the most amazing parts of the event was watching ETC youth interact with the guest performers at Lyrics Lounge. It was truly magical to see the students respond with such positive energy and enthusiasm. Check out these pics from the event. Really? You missed it? Shux. 😦
